How can subway trains maintain speed and stability during the morning rush hour? How can sudden surges in passenger flow be efficiently managed and evacuated in a timely manner? What measures can be taken to effectively restart a subway when it unexpectedly stops mid-route? With the deep integration of technologies such as AI, big data, and the Internet of Things, the rail transit industry—especially subways—is embarking on a transformative new chapter.
Smart Operation and Maintenance Enhance Rail Transit Efficiency and Safety
As of March 2022, Chongqing operates 10 rail transit lines spanning 403 kilometers, with over 400 trains transporting 3 million passengers daily. However, increasing passenger demand, aging equipment, rising failure rates, and growing operational emergencies have highlighted the challenges facing the system. Improving train operation and maintenance management and optimizing maintenance methods have become urgent priorities.
To address these challenges, new technologies including intelligent sensing, big data analytics, and cloud networking are being leveraged. By integrating key system technologies and innovating in intelligent technology, product development, and management models for urban rail transit’s core systems, Chongqing Rail Transit has made significant strides. After three years of development, the Vehicle Health Management and Intelligent Operation and Maintenance System launched in October 2021 and is currently being implemented and tested on Rail Transit Line 1.
The Most Advanced ‘Smart Brain’ in Rail Transit
On September 23, the first anniversary of the release of Sui Teng OS 2.0—the new generation smart rail transit operating system jointly developed by Guangzhou Metro and Tencent—was celebrated. Since its official debut on September 9, 2019, at Guangzhou Tower Station (a smart demonstration station), passengers have been able to pass through gates using facial recognition.
Currently, on Guangzhou Metro’s lines 18 and 22, known as the fastest subways in the Greater Bay Area, passengers experience seamless turnstiles, rapid intelligent security checks, and smart passenger flow guidance. Even subway restrooms are equipped with intelligent queue monitoring systems.
For operators, the Internet of Things enables efficient management of mechanical and electrical systems. Since launching intelligent operation and maintenance applications, staffing for production and maintenance on Line 18 has been reduced by 16%. Smart station applications, such as one-click station open/close and video patrol inspections, have shortened manual patrol times from one hour to just 10 minutes using smart cameras. Station staff can become “programmers” without coding knowledge by using simple drag-and-drop programming to customize patrol routes.
Supporting all these advancements is Sui Teng OS, the most powerful “smart brain” in rail transit today. This operating system, built on industrial Internet and IoT technologies, is transforming urban rail transit operations.

The Rail Transit Intelligent Operation and Maintenance Forum
Rail transit, recognized globally as green transportation, offers economic, environmental, and efficiency benefits, playing a crucial role in enhancing transportation capacity and travel efficiency.
To keep pace with future networked development trends and ensure safe, efficient, and intelligent operation of rail transit vehicle equipment systems, the “Rail Transit Smart Operation and Maintenance Forum” will be held in Nanjing from November 23 to 24, 2022. Initiated by the Urban Transportation Network and hosted by the Urban Public Transport Branch of the Chinese Civil Engineering Society, the event is co-organized by the Shandong Rail Transit Society, the Railway (Rail) Branch of the Jiangsu Comprehensive Transportation Society, the Shenzhen Urban Rail Transit Association, Shengge Exhibition (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., and other organizations.
The forum will explore intelligent operation and maintenance networks, new applications, cutting-edge cases, and future trends, broadening knowledge and innovation in smart operation and maintenance.

This event will gather experts and leaders from urban rail transit sectors nationwide to discuss the future of intelligent operation and maintenance and promote innovative development.
