The fundamental architectural concept of the Sejong Cultural and Art Hall is to carve into the land, lifting the two ends of the structure off the ground. The design involves cutting the site’s extremities and raising them in opposite directions. This approach allows the architect to open the two main facades towards both the city and the adjacent park, offering visitors two distinct perspectives of the surrounding urban landscape.
One of the architect’s key intentions is to showcase the excavated voids beneath the lifted surfaces, ensuring they remain visually connected to the natural rhythm and volume of the site. Consequently, the walls extending from the roof down to the hall are designed to be continuous. The detailing follows the principle of “zero dimension,” meaning there is no visible surface separating the roof from the ceiling, creating a seamless boundary.
The building and the ground merge into a continuous form, with the site’s center serving as an open air space. From this core, a vast inverted bowl-shaped arch extends outward, embracing the surrounding landscape beneath the sky. The undulating landform guides visitors gently towards the entrance, resembling waves or ripples that invite gradual approach.
At the end of this journey, visitors arrive at the performance hall, the central gathering space for the entire complex. The architect envisions this hall as a starting point for visitors to rediscover their sensory experiences. Surrounding the stage, rippling light and sound effects echo like multiple speakers, creating an immersive atmosphere that continuously resonates with the performers.
