The Shunde Opera House, designed by the Nordic Office of Architecture, has received acclaim from a panel of experts. This project serves as a cultural hub deeply connected to Shunde’s heritage while acting as a vibrant platform for contemporary art. It features a museum dedicated to showcasing Shunde’s historical and cultural legacy alongside a performance stage for modern art. Additionally, the facility houses an Art Academy focused on educating, inspiring, and nurturing future generations of artists.
“Through the Shunde Cultural Communication Center, we envisioned an outward-facing public building where both locals and visitors can immerse themselves in Shunde’s rich cultural heritage and enjoy world-class art performances across various formal and informal stages.”

In addition to the three major stages outlined in the project brief, the Nordic Office of Architecture designed a variety of experiential spaces. These range from a large public performance area in the main square to outdoor stages with open roofs and inviting lobbies. The cultural center is thoughtfully designed to foster diverse encounters and interactions, enabling audiences to engage with the building’s exterior and surrounding landscape in multiple ways.

Shunde’s design is deeply inspired by its rich water culture. Our team studied how rivers shape the landscape and applied this understanding to the architectural form. We created soft, flowing lines throughout the building, mirroring the natural flow of rivers. This approach resulted in two spacious public areas: one connected to the ground and another linked to the sky,” explained Jaymar Delgado, architect at Nordic Office of Architecture.

The Shunde Opera House, positioned on the western side of the site, features an outward-facing entrance square that opens onto lush green landscapes. On the eastern side lies the Creative Valley, centered around Green Square—a vibrant gathering place fostering collaboration between diverse creative disciplines.

The Golden Concert Hall draws inspiration from Lingnan’s terraced fields, featuring smooth, gentle lines that enhance stage visibility. The designers envisioned a golden ambiance, achieved through silk-wrapped wooden wall panels that emit a soft sheen, complemented by dark wood flooring and jade-green fabric cushions inspired by Shunde’s lush natural surroundings,” said Frederico Francisco, architect at Nordic Office of Architecture.

The opera stage, designed for close interaction between performers and the audience, features rich, luxurious interiors with deep red seating, dark wood finishes, and locally inspired patterned silk fabrics. This combination creates a warm and inviting atmosphere that reflects the regional context. Each theater includes an elevated lobby area to accommodate simultaneous performances. The cross-shaped stage layout offers flexibility for various shows and rehearsals while minimizing the distance between performers and spectators,” explained Zhang Yang, architect at Nordic Office of Architecture.

The central lobby design draws inspiration from silk, a historically significant material in Guangdong. The resting platforms wrap around the functional spaces like soft, airy ribbons, creating seamless horizontal connections between the three performance stages. This organic design enhances the elegance and fluidity of the space,” shared Eva Schwärzler, architect at Nordic Office of Architecture.
