The architectural concept of Aquatio Cave Hotel and Spa is inspired by the pure image of a water drop and its continuous descent. This theme influences the design of materials, spaces, furniture, and structural elements throughout the project.

The concept of ‘Dripping Water Droplets’ draws inspiration from Kengiro Azuma’s copper artwork, ‘MU765G’, located at one of the two main entrances of the building. Using the metaphor of the water cycle, the design elegantly expresses the essence and continuity of life.

Architect Cosimo dell’Acqua, following the client’s brief, not only showcased the academic rigor of architecture in routine and engineering projects but also undertook the comprehensive restoration of the village surrounding the site.

His work extended beyond a standalone building to include a complex system of buildings, roads, caves, and reservoirs. Many local houses were neglected, cluttered with debris, and in disrepair, necessitating a large-scale cleanup before restoration could proceed.

The Aquatio Cave Hotel and Spa is situated along the Carvoso Ridge, covering an area of approximately 5,000 square meters.

The lower level is accessed via the B. Buozzi main entrance, leading into the core internal spaces: the reception hall, restaurant, breakfast area, conference center, and health center. The two open plazas facing the entrance were previously residential blocks.

Interior and lighting design were completed by architect Simone Micheli.

The indoor décor is a pure artistic expression: white, flowing curves without sharp edges, creating a floating sensation across the floor.

The originally uneven cave and arch surfaces have been carefully cleaned to remove moss and weathering, restoring their original colors and materials. Subtle indirect lighting is installed below to enhance the ambiance and create a unique atmosphere.

Evoking emotions is a central theme throughout the design process. The health center exemplifies this concept. Originally a 9th-century basement located at the deepest point of the building, this space holds significant symbolic value.

The restaurant is a versatile space that seamlessly connects with the breakfast area and conference center. Its capacity can be easily adjusted to accommodate various events and occasions.

These spaces occupy the upper levels of the building, offering bright environments with stunning views of the Carvoso cliffs and the ancient city. Guests can enjoy the gentle breeze or explore the concave and convex caves hidden deep within the earth. A single door remains as a testament to the site’s role as an ancient Neolithic shelter in Murgia.

Within the rooms, all water systems flow back to the iconic starting point. This includes channels, small wells, and pools excavated into the walls, all carefully restored and presented to visitors arriving at Aquatio.
