BIM-Driven Design: Jinchang New City Sports Center at Huqiu Mountain by Zhongheng Design Group

The Jinchang Sports Stadium is situated in Jinchang New City, Gusu District, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province. This area serves as the urban sub-center of northwest Suzhou, the administrative hub of Jinchang District, and the logistics park for Suzhou City. It is a multifunctional district combining residential, commercial, administrative offices, and logistics. The site lies southwest of Hudian Road and northeast of Jinzheng Street, covering approximately 46,700 square meters, with a total built-up area of 33,800 square meters.

Huqiu Pagoda and Jinchang

Suzhou has long been renowned for its exquisite scenery and silk production, especially famous for the Song Dynasty brocade, silk, and satin discovered in the Jinchang region. Reflecting this heritage, architects incorporated Jinchang’s legacy into the design. From an aerial perspective, the stadium’s rooftops are layered and staggered, arranged in rows that resemble a dense, woven tapestry.

The Jinchang New City Sports Center is positioned opposite the scenic Huqiu Tower to the southeast. A tranquil observation platform lies on the south side of the venue, connected by a gentle slope that leads visitors along winding paths reminiscent of the mountain trails in Tiger Hill’s forests. These platforms vary in height, with orderly transitions allowing visitors to rest and enjoy the views at every turn.

The coordination between rooftop activities and indoor events aligns with the flow of the adjacent sports park, creating a seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces that connect with the surrounding city nodes.

Multifunctional Integration

Given the diverse and dense layout of the Jinchang New City Sports Center, which differs from single-purpose buildings, architects adopted a unified architectural language—a consistent roof design and base platform—to organize the scattered functional elements into a cohesive spatial cluster, enhancing scale and overall harmony.BIM Architecture | Huqiu Mountain, North of New City: Jinchang New City Sports Center/Zhongheng Design Group

Commercial areas are positioned along the river, with the first floor mainly dedicated to commercial training spaces, while the upper floors primarily house large event venues. This convenient and multifunctional arrangement integrates scarce urban resources, promoting the development of cultural and sports complexes within the city.

Natural Ecological Dimensions

The exterior plaza, designed as a landscape space connecting to the sports park’s green areas, serves as a gathering spot. Rich plantings and varied paving patterns enhance the plaza’s visual hierarchy, while ample tree pits and seating areas offer comfortable spaces for rest.

The multiple courtyard spaces on the first floor act as “open-air living rooms” for the sports center, serving as indoor extensions of the architecture and natural inward extensions of the exterior. These open areas enhance natural light and ventilation, significantly reducing energy consumption during transitional seasons.

The abundant use of plant landscapes within the courtyards reduces the building’s imposing feel, creating a more comfortable scale and providing vibrant outdoor activity spaces for the community.

Waterfront Material Aesthetics

The sports hall’s facade features white wavy GRC panels that echo the shimmering water surface of Langqiao Port nearby. Below, an expansive glass curtain wall reflects the surrounding natural environment, allowing the building to interact organically with the city and its landscape, achieving a multidimensional integration.

The roof, with upright lock edges, slopes gracefully, forming a metal sheet facade that contrasts sharply with the white GRC panels. This design creates a smooth visual flow, emphasizing the building’s lines and movement.

The material choices here are not only innovative within a modern context but also express the cultural character of entertainment architecture through their aesthetic qualities.
