“The mission of contemporary people is to seek freedom in order, pursue innovation within rules, and create dreams for others.” – Steve Jobs

01. Under the Eaves
In an era marked by extreme standardization and order, we have grown accustomed to living under the care of others and the protection of our surroundings. The eaves symbolize this concept of “shelter” — offering not only physical security but also spiritual support and a sense of home.
As a vital architectural element, eaves extend beyond mere physical space; they embody rich cultural and social meanings. We build nests under eaves, stand beneath them, grow there, and strengthen our wings to soar. Chao Yu’s new office space centers around the concept of “eaves,” gathering a group of passionate young dreamers. Here, they break free from their cocoons, building nests and inviting phoenixes to land.

Chao Yu’s office space is a renovation of an old building in downtown Suzhou. The entrance features eaves constructed from metal rods and plates, modularly combined with warm birch wood panels, blending innovation with order. This design enhances spatial qualities while creating a lasting visual tension, balancing the coldness of metal with the warmth of wood, bridging the gap between old and new.
02. Within the Eaves
Inside the eaves, birch wood panels are extensively used, preserving their natural texture and patterns. The design aims to retain the material’s authentic warmth and character. By focusing on materials and maintaining spatial purity, this architectural firm intentionally minimizes excessive decoration, allowing the materials themselves to communicate the space’s emotions.
Through these simple material combinations, the space exudes a bright and warm atmosphere—real, trustworthy, confident, and self-sufficient.

The office layout is open and flexible, avoiding unnecessary partitions. This encourages free movement and open communication among the team. Desks and storage units are custom-designed by the architects, combining birch wood panels with aluminum profiles. The contrast between the natural wood and sleek aluminum creates a distinctive spatial language.

Our hope is that this office space supports colleagues in relaxing both body and mind, encourages graceful work habits, and fosters calm, focused research—rather than a constant rush. We want this environment to inspire awareness of time’s rhythm, the joy of design, the meaning of life, and the value of creativity.
03. Space Temperature
The reception area aims to evoke stability, order, tranquility, and character. Featuring abundant metal panels and black wood veneers, it creates a serene and profound atmosphere. Moving away from conventional, rigid meeting rooms, this space is designed as a warm, orderly living area—inviting, inclusive, and expressive.

This intimate space reflects the host’s personality through black wood veneers, antique furniture, collected vinyl records, and calligraphy paintings. It offers a natural and spontaneous atmosphere where music and wine bring three to five friends together to share ideas, chat, and connect freely.

Every detail, piece of furniture, and ornament is thoughtfully considered. We aim to fill every corner with warmth and comfort, fostering natural and effortless communication. In this relaxed and inviting atmosphere, hosting guests becomes an enjoyable experience.
04. Newborn
Life is full of surprises and energy—whether found in unexpected encounters, profound thoughts, or bold attempts.
Old objects have been reinterpreted and reconstructed into new installations hidden throughout the space. These reclaimed elements symbolize rebirth as they enter a new phase, ready to take flight.

We strive to perceive, experience, and create with heart—enriching our inner worlds, expanding our horizons, and integrating inner and external spaces as essential parts of life’s journey. It is this constant source of energy that drives us forward, encouraging us to explore the world boldly.
Amid the bustling old streets, focus on yourself to find peace and harmony. Create, live, and grow together within your own spiritual space.
Under the eaves, we build nests. Innovating within order.
