Scattered around the horseshoe-shaped rice fields in the mountains, the homestays complement the natural landscape beautifully. Their simple, calm design combined with traditional materials and forms makes these structures appear as though they naturally belong to the environment.

Introverted and “Inward-Looking”: Plant Protection Building at China Agricultural University

The Plant Protection Building at China Agricultural University, designed by Gu Zhihong Studio of Tianjin University Design Institute, won first prize at the 2020 “Haihe Cup” Tianjin Excellent Survey and Design Building Engineering Public Construction competition.

This project features an inward-facing “C”-shaped layout centered on professors, optimizing spatial relationships and combining active and passive design elements. The use of heavy red bricks integrates the building harmoniously into the campus while maintaining its unique character.

“Quezhe”: A Venue Regeneration Project for Hutongs and Courtyards

Located in Shichahai, Beijing, this hutong courtyard renovation addresses the overshadowing caused by tall buildings on the east and west sides. The architect introduced an inverted roof design with a “folding” form and employed borrowed scenery techniques to connect the courtyard with the southern distant view, infusing natural vitality into the space.

The newly opened Wuzhong Road Station on Shanghai Metro Line 15 serves as a public cultural space celebrating the city’s reform and opening-up achievements. Its station hall floor symbolizes the Huangpu River, flanked by the iconic urban landscapes of Pudong and Puxi, while the ends of the hall embody Shanghai’s bright future.
