BIM Q&A | What is Rhino Software?
Modeling Software
Rhino is a widely used modeling software in the field of architecture. It is lightweight, user-friendly, and allows for fast model creation. Rhino can seamlessly interact and convert files with CAD software. Currently, I am using it for curtain wall design and mostly rely on it for modeling, although I am still learning the software.
Here is an overview from Baidu:
Overview
Rhino, also known as Rhinoceros, is a compact yet powerful 3D modeling tool. It is just over 100 megabytes in size and has modest hardware requirements. Despite its small footprint, Rhino offers a full range of NURBS modeling features, providing a smooth modeling experience. This makes it popular for creating and exporting high-precision models that can be used in other 3D software.
To give some background, Rhino3D is based on NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines), a mathematical model for generating curves and surfaces. It is an advanced modeling software developed by Robert McNeel & Associates in the United States, first released in 1998. The core developers of Rhino come from the original Alias team (the company behind MAYA).
Given the vast variety of 3D graphics software available today, Rhino stands out by offering specialized value, particularly in modeling. It strongly competes with major 3D software giants like Maya, SoftImage XSI, Houdini, 3DS Max, and LightWave in this area. Since its launch, countless 3D professionals and enthusiasts have been impressed by Rhino’s powerful modeling capabilities.
Rhino is known as a “populist” high-end software. Unlike “elite” applications such as Maya or SoftImage XSI, which require Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, or even SGI Irix workstations and expensive high-end graphics cards, Rhino can run on Windows 95 with a basic ISA graphics card or even an outdated 486 computer. Furthermore, Rhino is much smaller in size compared to other 3D software, which can easily reach hundreds of megabytes; Rhino’s installation is only a few megabytes.
This lightweight design truly reflects the spirit of “small but fully equipped.” With the addition of renderers like Flamingo and BMRT, Rhino’s image quality approaches that of high-end rendering engines. Rhino is not only used for industrial design, including CAD and CAM, but also excels in creating models for cartoons, scene production, and advertising animations.
Its user-friendly interface makes Rhino an indispensable tool for designers and provides a solid foundation for learning other software such as SolidThinking and Alias. In summary, Rhino3D NURBS is a powerful and practical advanced modeling software that every 3D modeling expert should master.
