The Architectural Design and Research Institute of South China University of Technology is a nationally recognized Grade A design and research institute, established in 1953. As one of the earliest Grade A institutes founded within key universities in China, it officially took its current name in 1988 after being established in 1979.
With over 60 years of experience and development, the institute has grown into a design organization with strong technical expertise, a well-structured talent pool, comprehensive professional support facilities, and advanced design methodologies. Its quality assurance system is among the leading standards in the domestic industry. The institute holds multiple construction industry qualifications, including architectural engineering, intelligent building system engineering design, urban planning, municipal engineering, landscape engineering design, environmental engineering, engineering consulting in architecture and urban planning, and cultural heritage protection engineering survey and design. It is also certified under ISO9001 quality management standards.
Significant recognitions include the National Excellent Survey and Design Institute award in 2006, ranking among the “Top Ten Architectural Design Companies in China” by BCI ASIA Group in 2007, and being listed as one of the Top 100 Contemporary Chinese Architectural Design Institutes in 2012.
2. Project Overview
The Jiangmen Binjiang Sports Center is situated in the core area of the Binjiang New District’s startup zone in Jiangmen City. It is bordered by Tiansha River Road to the east, Xinnan Road West Section to the north, Tiyu East Road to the west, and the Planned Second Road to the south. The project covers approximately 53 hectares of land, with a total building area of 252,000 square meters.
The complex comprises a 40,000-seat sports stadium, a swimming pool facility spanning around 25,000 square meters with 2,000 fixed seats, a 6,000-seat sports hall, a comprehensive training building covering 60,000 square meters, two training halls, two exhibition halls, and outdoor amenities including indoor and underground parking lots, group activity areas, landscaping, roads, and parking spaces.
Construction was planned to commence at the end of 2011. Upon completion, the center is designed to meet the venue standards for hosting the 15th Provincial Games and select international competitions in 2018. It is also envisioned as a landmark structure and city center in the southern part of Binjiang New Area, integrating business, leisure, entertainment, shopping, tourism, and exhibition functions.
During the early design phase, BIM technology was adopted, employing ARCHICAD software for schematic design, model creation, clash detection, rendering, and animation walkthroughs. The design accuracy met all requirements and received unanimous praise from the client.
