The Huong An Vien Visitor Center, recently completed by VTN Architects, continues their exploration of sculptural bamboo architecture. Situated in the natural surroundings of a cemetery area, just 10 kilometers from Hue City in central Vietnam, this project redefines the traditional atmosphere of cemeteries—often associated with death and sorrow—by creating a serene and peaceful space, as agreed upon by both the owners and architects.

Located amid a network of four large lakes surrounded by gentle hills, the Huong An Vien Visitor Center is enveloped by lush greenery—trees, flowers, and various plants—that offer visitors a calming and pleasant environment. VTN Architects drew inspiration from the soft, traditional architecture of Hue City along the nearby Huong River when designing the center’s vibrant, curved bamboo roof. The dynamic, low-hanging eaves shield the interior from direct sunlight and rain while maintaining an open connection to nature.

The design of the visitor center thoughtfully extends into its natural surroundings, symbolizing respect and remembrance for the departed. Constructed with carefully selected, locally sourced bamboo boards, thatch, and perforated bricks, the building emphasizes sustainability. Its orientation promotes natural airflow and ample daylight, reducing the need for air conditioning and artificial lighting. Each section of the structure is built from a single module, allowing for quick, cost-effective assembly.
