In today’s globalized world, where educational resources cross borders freely, Zhejiang University has embraced the strategic vision of establishing an international campus. The Zhejiang University International Joint College (Haining International Campus) is situated in the Juanhu International Science and Technology City, in eastern Haining City, Zhejiang Province. It enjoys a unique natural setting: 1,300 acres of water from Juanhu Lake lie to the south, a wetland park to the north, and rivers border the east and west, creating a natural enclosure around the campus.

The campus design departs from traditional zoning models and instead adopts a functional framework inspired by the British “residential college” model. It integrates colleges, teaching and service complexes, and public research platforms into a comprehensive, multi-functional layout.

The architectural style of Haining International Campus embraces neoclassicism, with subtle variations across different clusters — ranging from dignified and rational to elegant and relaxed, or modern and streamlined. This diversity reflects an international historical perspective while also expressing Zhejiang University’s cultural confidence and identity.
The buildings’ exterior walls primarily feature plain red bricks. Over ten distinct architectural details are crafted using simple red bricks, offering a fresh interpretation of traditional elements. The meticulous masonry and natural tones bring the clear water bricks to life, casting rich shadows under sunlight without appearing heavy.

On rainy days, the warm hues of red bricks combined with light sandstone create a steady and inviting atmosphere, giving the campus a sense of accumulated history since its inception.

Brick and stone columns have long symbolized university culture. Using red bricks as the primary material not only imparts a warm, substantial appearance but also conveys a refined and elegant spirit. More importantly, it preserves and continues the campus’s rich humanistic tradition.
