Located in the heart of the International Art Exhibition City in Bao’an District, Shenzhen, the iADC Design Museum features a suspended volume that creates a gateway square to the city. This square seamlessly connects the art town block with the International Art Exhibition Center, forming an open space that fosters communication and interaction within the city.
The museum’s core theme is design, offering versatile exhibition spaces, supporting facilities, and public areas. It hosts regular exhibitions, lectures, and salons, serving as a dynamic platform for exchange between local and international designers.
The design begins with a pure square form but breaks away from rigidity by folding the façade skin. Different folding techniques create functional elements like sunshades and canopies, adapting to various street environments. This flexible approach injects vitality and freedom into the building’s form.
From another perspective, the architecture symbolizes openness—breaking free from traditional box-like structures and unleashing creativity. This concept defines the vision behind the area’s planning.
Inside, the exhibition halls are arranged around a central courtyard that allows natural light to fill the interior. Additionally, the folded façade scatters light along the spiral exhibition path, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and lowering energy consumption.
The building’s suspended volume also creates a variety of comfortable urban grey spaces, including entrance stairs, sunken courtyards, plazas, and pools, all designed to adapt to Shenzhen’s subtropical climate.
