Using Reference Lines and Reference Planes in Revit
In Revit, reference lines and reference planes are essential tools when creating families. It is often necessary to lock model elements to a reference plane, using it to drive parameterization. Reference lines, on the other hand, are primarily used to control angles during parameterization.
1. Open the Metric Conventional Model Family Template. Draw a reference plane and view its instance properties as shown in the image below.
In the properties bar, you can assign a name to the reference plane you just created. When setting the work plane, you can directly select this named reference plane.
The Is Reference property controls how the reference plane interacts within the project:
- None: The reference plane cannot be snapped to in the project and cannot be used for dimension annotations.
- Strong Reference: The reference plane has the highest priority for selection and snapping. Even if multiple elements overlap, this reference plane will be selected first.
- Weak Reference: The plane can only be selected by cycling through elements using the Tab key.
The Define Origin property sets the insertion point of the family, which is usually set to (0,0,0) by default and typically remains unchanged.
2. Reference lines differ from reference planes in that they have two additional endpoints and two extra work planes. Visually, reference planes appear as dashed lines, whereas reference lines are shown as solid lines. In 3D views, only reference lines are visible; reference planes are not displayed.
3. When drawing a reference line, you can lock its endpoints to the reference plane, annotate the angle, and use it to parameterize the angle of your model element.
Summary: When building a family, it is important to use numerous reference planes and reference lines. Understanding their differences and roles will help you parameterize your family more effectively and maintain a standardized workflow.
