How to Add Parameters to Openings in Revit
When creating openings for elements like walls in Revit projects, it can be challenging to ensure their accuracy. By adding parameters directly within the opening family, you can achieve precise control before importing the family into your project. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to add parameters to openings within a family.
1. Start by creating a metric standard model based on walls. Switch to an edge view and draw reference planes as illustrated in the image.
2. Under the Create tab, select the opening tool and draw the opening within the area defined by the reference planes, as shown below.
3. Add parameters for the length and width of the opening. Use instance parameters to allow adjustments to individual openings within the project without affecting others, as demonstrated.
4. Adjusting the length and width parameters will dynamically change the size of the opening, as depicted in the figure.
5. Load the customized opening family into your project. Select the opening to accurately modify its dimensions within the project environment, as illustrated.
Why This Matters: Creating an opening family with parameters overcomes the limitations of Revit’s built-in opening tools. Additionally, you can include other parameters during family creation, such as constraints on bottom height, enabling more flexible and precise use.
