Why Can’t You Modify Revit System Family Names? System families come preloaded in Revit project templates and cannot be imported from external files into templates or projects. These system families cannot be created, modified, copied, or deleted. The only way to differentiate between system families is by changing their type names.
System families encompass essential building components such as walls, floors, ceilings, and stairs in architectural models. In mechanical and electrical models, they include ducts, pipes, conduits, bridges, and similar elements. Additionally, system families cover project and system settings that influence the project environment, including elements like dimensions, levels, grids, schedules, drawings, and viewports.
Each system family must retain at least one type; while other system family types can be deleted, you cannot remove all types because a system family requires at least one type to create new types. Some special system families consist of loadable families—for example, the railing system family is made up of two loadable families: a horizontal handrail and a vertical handrail.
