What Is CIM and What Does It Include?

Today, we will explore What is CIM? And what content does it include? The City Information Model (CIM) is an integrated synthesis of three-dimensional urban spatial models combined with urban information data. It primarily consists of GIS data and BIM data for large-scale scenarios, encompassing the following key components:

1. Building Modules

In a metropolis, buildings exhibit distinct characteristics: structures from the same era typically share architectural styles and construction methods. Moreover, building information is stored differently across time periods. To address this, various methods are employed to collect building data. For example, modern buildings usually have comprehensive information stored in CAD or Revit formats, allowing them to be directly integrated into urban building information models. For older buildings lacking design drawings or detailed records, rapid scanning technologies can capture both interior and exterior details. The end result is a complete urban building information model that includes data on exterior walls, materials, and structural elements.

2. Transportation Module

This module covers road-related information such as length, width, traffic signs, and markings. By analyzing building locations, urban roads and transportation systems can be identified. The urban transportation information model manages road types, vehicle positioning, traffic control, and route planning to optimize city mobility.

3. Urban Public Facilities Module

This section includes urban amenities such as parks, green spaces, and pedestrian pathways—all vital for enhancing residents’ quality of life. These facilities provide spaces for relaxation and recreation while offering convenience in daily activities. Collecting detailed information on these amenities helps governments manage resources effectively and improve urban living standards.

Regarding the MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) module, official data remains limited. Its inclusion in CIM depends on future data availability and contributions from researchers. In recent years, BIM technology has increasingly been adopted in construction to develop comprehensive building information models, with Revit MEP playing a significant role. This includes HVAC systems, underground piping, electrical lighting, and power systems. Revit MEP offers segmented information models, while RFID and GIS technologies further enhance data collection.

4. Water Module

This module encompasses urban water bodies such as rivers, lakes, and oceans. Water is essential not only for daily consumption but also for maintaining ecosystems. Addressing water pollution and managing water resources effectively requires thorough data collection. One of CIM’s main challenges is integrating both outdoor and indoor information into the model. Potential solutions include:

  • Measuring existing buildings to build detailed 3D models, though this is labor-intensive.
  • Combining CAD and GIS models, which, however, lack indoor details.
  • Extracting indoor information from existing BIM models while using GIS for outdoor data, complemented by technologies such as 3D laser scanning and photography.

At the start of the 21st century, digitization gradually evolved into informatization—integrating attribute and related information alongside spatial data. Recently, informatization has achieved cross-departmental and interdisciplinary integration, allowing information technology to be truly applied to both production and daily life. Looking ahead, whether through big data, integrated utility corridors, sponge city concepts, or other urban information technologies, the focus will remain on the collection and utilization of comprehensive urban data.

That concludes our discussion on What is CIM? And what content is included? I hope this article has been helpful!
