What to Do When Family Files Saved in Revit Do Not Display Thumbnails
Sometimes, when saving family files in Revit, the thumbnails may fail to display, as illustrated below. However, some families still show preview images correctly. Why does this happen?
In Revit, the display of thumbnails is controllable. When saving a family file, click on Options to select the source for the thumbnail preview, as shown in the image below:
If you choose the thumbnail preview source as 3D View: View 1, the family file’s thumbnail will be generated based on that selected view. Note: If the selected view for the thumbnail preview has never been opened in Revit, the thumbnail will not be created.
The reason why previously saved family files did not display thumbnails is often because the thumbnail preview source was set to 3D View: View 1, but this view had never been opened.
Alternatively, if the thumbnail preview source is set to Activity View/Drawing, the thumbnail will be based on the last view opened when saving the file.
To fix missing thumbnails, reopen the family file and switch to the 3D view—either 3D or View 1. Adjust the family display in that view, then save the family file again. When choosing the thumbnail preview source, select the view you just adjusted. This will ensure the family file’s thumbnail displays correctly.
