Understanding the Difference Between Projection Surface and Section in Revit Filters

Difference Between Projection Surface and Section in Revit Filters

Projection can be compared to viewing a slideshow: you project the outline of an object onto the screen from your perspective.

In contrast, a cross-section involves slicing through an object with an imaginary knife, then displaying the object’s outline from a specific angle. The solid portion intersected by the cut generates a section line.

When a model element intersects the section plane within the view range—meaning the model is cut—the section line of that element appears in the plan view.

If the model element lies below the cutting plane but above the depth elevation within the view range—meaning it is not cut—the projection line of the element is shown in the plan view.

Surface line information, however, is not visible in the plan view and can only be seen in 3D or elevation views. This represents the display of the model’s surface details.
