Located at the base of Kirishima Mountain in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan, this rural kindergarten and daycare has a rich history. Many children who once studied here return years later with their own kids, making it a cherished tradition in the local community. Inspired by this heritage, the project’s design theme is centered on Bonds.

Over the past 30 years, the original building underwent several renovations and expansions, yet it no longer met the ideal environment needed to nurture children today. As a result, the old structure was demolished and replaced with a thoughtfully designed new building. The layout clearly defines spaces for various functions such as learning, playing, dining, and sports.

Four ancient trees were preserved on the site, standing tall as guardians watching over the next generation. These trees are visible from every nursery room, forming the centerpiece of the architectural design and creating a visual connection between the rooms, the trees, and the children.
The fire escape on the second floor extends beneath the tree branches, allowing children to experience nature up close and providing a playful space below. Additionally, many red pine and cypress trees native to Miyazaki Prefecture were planted around the site, reinforcing the bond between the kindergarten, local community, and nature.
By clearly separating spaces according to their functions, children are encouraged to recognize, think, learn, and understand how to behave appropriately in each area.
