Fixing Inaccurate Wall Transfers from Revit to Structural Models

Fixing Incorrect Wall Placement When Copying from Revit Building to Structural Model

When copying walls from the building model to the structural model, you might notice that the walls are not positioned correctly. This typically happens when the wall type is changed to represent only the core layer of the structure, but the copied wall does not align with the building wall’s core layer.

The root cause of this problem is that copied walls are placed based on the wall’s centerline—not the centerline of the core layer. If the structural wall’s centerline does not match the building wall’s centerline, the copied wall will be misaligned.

Solution 1: To prevent this issue, you can take one of the following approaches:

  • Use the building wall type for the copied walls in the structural model.
  • Avoid using the “Copy/Monitor” function to copy the wall directly into the structural model. Instead, follow these steps:
  • Create a wall style that represents only the core layer of the wall.
  • Link the architectural model to the structural model and lock it in place.
  • Manually track the new structural wall on top of the building wall in the linked model by using a new structural wall type.
  • Use the “Align” tool to align walls in the structural model with those in the building model, and establish constraints between them.

Solution 2: This solution involves using the Copy/Monitor tools with linked models:

  • Copy the wall you want to monitor, following the instructions in Copy Elements to Monitor. Set the appropriate options for copying the wall as described in the Copy/Monitor settings.
  • If the wall orientation is reversed (e.g., internal vs. external face), select the wall and either use the flip controls or press the spacebar to adjust its direction. See Flip Handle for details.
  • Stop monitoring the wall temporarily.
  • Select the wall, then in the properties palette, change the wall’s positioning line to “Core Layer Centerline.”
  • Change the wall type to the correct structural core wall type.
  • Resume monitoring the walls in the linked model.
