Understanding Parameterization in Revit Software: What It Means and How It Works

What is Revit Software Parameterization? What Does It Mean? The Revit software suite—including Revit Architecture, Revit MEP, Revit Structure, and others—utilizes the concept of parameterization to build the entire model. Parametric modeling forms a fundamental basis of BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology. Parameterization refers to the relationships among all components that make up the model. These components, which are the basic elements of Revit’s architectural information model, can be broadly categorized into three types: (1) Model Elements, (2) Datum Elements, and (3) View-Specific Elements.

Revit manages and coordinates changes among model components through a parameterization mechanism known as the “parameter change engine.” Some of these relationships are predefined by the software system, while others are assigned by the user as needed. The values or attributes that define these relationships are called “parameters,” hence the term parameterized operation. Whenever a component in the project model is modified, Revit’s parameter change engine automatically synchronizes the change throughout the entire project model. For example, if an exterior wall connects to the edge of a floor or roof, it will remain attached to that floor or roof when moved. This parameterization mechanism, which establishes compositional relationships between the basic building components, leads to several important concepts.

Since BIM represents the integration of all information related to a building throughout its entire lifecycle—and a building is considered a project from the planning stage—Revit attempts to group the main components of a building information model within a single project file. Besides the primary building structure, there are also life-support systems such as mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems, as well as structural analysis systems like building frameworks. Although these systems belong to the same building space, their professional disciplines operate independently. Revit software allows three types of professional engineers to work separately yet still closely integrate their individual development files into the same engineering project. In Revit, the term “Project” closely resembles the familiar concept of an “engineering project.” A “project” in Revit is essentially a single information database for design tasks, also known as the Building Information Model (BIM).

A Revit project file contains all the data related to the building information model, including geometric shapes as well as non-geometric static and dynamic information. This comprehensive data set encompasses all components used for model design, project views, and the production of design drawings. Revit aims to consolidate all information for an engineering project into one project file, allowing modelers to focus solely on this single file when constructing and maintaining the project information model. When changes are made, the parameter setting engine updates all related areas in real time—including plan views, elevation views, section views, and detail schedules.
