How to Redefine Insertion Points for Families in Revit
The insertion point of a family determines where it will be placed within a project. This point must be set when creating the family. So, how can you modify the insertion point? Below is a step-by-step guide.
1. By default, when no changes are made, the insertion point in a loaded family is located at the intersection of the two default reference planes, as illustrated below.
2. To define a custom insertion point, select the reference plane you want to use and uncheck the “Define Origin” box in the properties panel on the right, as shown in the image.
3. You can then move the original reference plane or create a new one. After positioning it, click “Define Origin” to set the new insertion point, as demonstrated.
This approach allows you to adjust the family’s insertion point without having to move the model itself.
Why is this important? Proper placement of components is crucial throughout the project. When default insertion points make placement inconvenient, redefining the insertion point within the family simplifies positioning.
