How to Adjust Family Placement According to Work Plane in Revit

How to Modify Family Placement Based on the Work Plane in Revit

When creating families in Revit, nested families are commonly used. However, the default loading orientation is always perpendicular to the reference level. Even when moved to an elevation view, the family remains perpendicular to the elevation and cannot align parallel to the reference level, as illustrated below.

1. Select the placed family, then click Edit Family from the Modify menu, as shown in the image.

2. In the properties panel while editing the family, uncheck Always vertical and check Based on the work plane. After making these changes, reload the family into your project, as demonstrated in the figure.

3. You can specify a new work plane by re-selecting it during placement. The resulting family will then be aligned parallel to the reference elevation, as shown in the final example.

Note: Correct component placement and selecting the appropriate work plane are critical. When you face a situation where you cannot place a component on a suitable work plane, use this method to edit the family accordingly. Then, coordinate with the work plane selection to complete the component placement successfully.
