wHY Architecture Firm has unveiled plans for a new theater in Perm, a Russian city near the Ural Mountains. Approved by local government authorities, this project is set to become a key part of the region’s ongoing revitalization efforts. Positioned on the banks of the Kama River with panoramic views of the city, the theater is designed to be highly “permeable” and open, providing vistas of Perm from every angle.

The design of the Tchaikovsky Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre draws inspiration from the fluid movements of dance and music. Its material palette echoes the ancient geological formations and copper mining heritage of the region. Instead of a traditional square footprint, the building features an organic, curving exterior that winds and extends, inviting visitors to ascend and explore its sculptural variety. Ramps and walkways foster a continuous flow through the space, encouraging exploration of the outdoor areas and their year-round changing scenery.

The architectural form seamlessly extends into the adjacent park, where a network of paths and resting platforms creates a harmonious connection between the building and its natural surroundings. According to wHY, the project aims to establish a vibrant cultural hub for the city—a lively celebration at the intersection of culture, industry, people, and history—ushering Perm into a new era of cultural and economic growth.

Andrija Stojic, head of wHY’s New York office and architectural studio, will collaborate closely with Mark Thomann, leader of wHY’s landscape studio, to bring this project to life. “Our goal is to create a cultural landmark and an international destination for Perm and Russia,” said Stojic. “The architectural space should embody the energy and creativity of the performances it hosts. I believe music serves as a bridge between past and future—our design honors Perm’s history and culture while providing Tchaikovsky’s ballet with the world-class theater it deserves.”
