The Tadao Ando Architectural Firm has unveiled the latest images of the soon-to-be-completed Shunde “He Art Museum (HEM)”. Scheduled to open on March 21, 2020, this new cultural landmark will feature a series of exhibitions celebrating Lingnan culture from southern China.

The museum’s name honors its founder, He Jianfeng. Additionally, the word “He” carries multiple meanings including harmony, balance, good fortune, and unity—all qualities reflected in the building’s architectural design and spatial concept. During the design process, Tadao Ando conducted extensive research into ancient Chinese history and Lingnan culture, seamlessly integrating these influences with his signature use of natural light.

Tadao Ando stated, “My goal is to create a museum that embodies the rich, diverse culture of southern China, which has evolved over thousands of years, and the heritage that has shaped Lingnan architecture. I envision the ‘He Art Museum’ as a dynamic cultural hub that celebrates the art, customs, climate, landscapes, and civilizations of the Lingnan region. I hope it will become the heart of Lingnan culture—not only in Shunde but across China. I look forward to seeing how art and events will bring this space to life, inspiring visitors through high-quality spaces and artworks.”

The defining feature of the “He Art Museum” is its central “double spiral” staircase, ascending through four floors and illuminated by sunlight streaming in from the rooftop courtyard. This design draws inspiration from traditional Lingnan architecture, which often incorporates roof skylights. Ancient Chinese cosmology regards the sky as round and sacred, and the natural light filtering from above permeates the floor plan and exhibition spaces, creating a welcoming environment that connects the interior with the outdoors.

The museum offers a variety of spaces including galleries, educational areas, an open bookstore, and cafes. Its versatility makes it not only a place for art but also a peaceful environment for study and socializing. Aside from the square-shaped gallery on the first floor, the upper floors feature circular floor plans. Surrounding the building is a reflecting pool, echoing the traditional waterside pavilions of the Lingnan region. This water element also symbolizes the museum’s location at the mouth of the Pearl River.

At its opening ceremony on March 21, 2020, the “He Art Museum” will present exhibitions curated by Feng Boyi alongside other temporary shows. The inaugural exhibition, titled “From the Ordinary World,” explores themes of ecology, civilization, human-environment interactions, and the rapid urbanization experienced by China and its people.
