The family is corrupted and cannot be edited in Revit 2020. How can this issue be resolved? A user reported encountering the following message while working on a Revit 2020 project: “The family <family name> is damaged and cannot be edited. Please reload the family to repair the project.” [Environment: Revit 2020.2]
Status:
We are currently investigating the possible causes of this issue and exploring appropriate solutions.
Additional Information:
This problem occurs specifically in Revit 2020 projects that were created and subsequently processed in Revit 2020.2.
Solution:
If you are not yet using Revit 2020.2, it is recommended to avoid updating until an official fix is released.
If you are using Revit 2020.2, you can perform several one-time actions within this version to prevent the problem:
- Rename all families in the project (for example, change FamilyX to FamilyX-2, then rename it back to FamilyX), or
- Save the model as a new central file (ensure it is a new file, not just “Save As” to the same location),
- Reload all families in the project, including company-specific, Autodesk, and third-party families, or
- Revert the entire project team back to Revit 2020.1. If your team uses mixed versions, we strongly recommend that everyone switch to the same version to avoid reintroducing issues. Mixing Revit 2020.2 with earlier versions can cause problems to reoccur in the model.
