How to Set View Templates in Revit
Wondering how to set up or create a new view template in a Revit project? Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get started.
First, open any project file and locate the Project Browser. In the dialog box, switch to the 2F Plan view. Then, go to the View tab, find the Graphics panel, and click on View Template. From the dropdown menu, select Create a template from the current view, as shown below:
Next, in the pop-up New View Template dialog box, enter a name for your template—for example, Teaching Building Model, as illustrated:
Click OK. A View Template dialog box will appear. Make sure to check all options under the View Properties panel, then click OK, as demonstrated below:
In the View Control Bar, set the Detail Level to Fine and the Visual Style to Coloring, as shown here:
Again, under the View tab and Graphics panel, click View Template. From the dropdown, select Apply template properties to the current view. In the pop-up Apply View Template dialog, choose Teaching Building Model, then click OK. The results are shown in Figures 4.4-3 and 4.4-4.
Now, the 2F view uses the specified Teaching Building Model template. You can apply the same process for other views like 3F. To do this, in the Project Browser, switch to the 3F Plan view. Then, on the View tab within the Graphics panel, click View Template and select Apply template properties to the current view, as shown:
In the pop-up Apply View Template dialog, select Teaching Building Model, then click OK. You can verify that the template is applied by checking the View Properties dialog, as illustrated:
Once again, in the Apply View Template dialog box, select Teaching Building Model and click OK, as shown here:
If you want to edit the view template settings, go to the View Control Bar. Note that options like View Scale, Detail Level, and Visual Style will be grayed out because the view template is already applied (e.g., to the 3F view), as depicted in Figure 4.4-5:
Setting up view templates in Revit is actually straightforward. With practice, you’ll deepen your understanding and become more efficient.
