How to Calculate Earthwork Volume Using Revit
Revit’s native Terrain and Flat Area functions enable quick and convenient calculation of excavation and fill volumes required for site leveling.
1. First, create a terrain surface. You can do this using either the “Place Point” command or the import creation command. For example, using the “Place Point” command, place four points with elevations of -500, -500, 500, and 500 respectively, as illustrated below.
2. Next, use the “Flat Area” command to generate a new terrain surface that duplicates the existing one, as shown in the figure.
3. Select the terrain and adjust the elevation of all four placement points to 0. This completes the operation and displays the terrain before and after leveling, as demonstrated in the image.
4. Finally, select the terrain before leveling. In the properties bar, you can view the earthwork volumes, including excavation, fill, transport, or surplus soil quantities, as shown below.
Note: Revit software includes powerful quantity calculation features. Attributes and detailed schedule functions available in the properties panel allow for comprehensive quantity calculations. For more precise quantity measurements, further project-specific refinement is necessary.
