Set beneath a vast roof, this building harmoniously merges with its surrounding landscape. Visitors here can explore cutting-edge sustainable knowledge and understand the subtle effects of daily human activities on marine ecosystems. The project began in 2014 when NORD Architects won the design competition for the Malmö Regional Marine Education Center in Sweden. Their goal was to create a landmark architectural work that brings people closer to the ocean and sustainability, while blurring the line between architecture and landscape to create a seamless transition from the coast to the sea.

The Ocean Education Center aims to improve ocean conditions through public education, focusing on knowledge, awareness, and responsibility. It targets not only the general public but also businesses and policymakers. The center also invites school groups and local families to engage in this educational environment. Collaborating with nearby universities and research institutions, the center strives to be a sustainable, creative, and educational hub.

Designed with multiple flexible learning spaces beneath its expansive roof, the building blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor environments. This design allows visitors to fully immerse themselves in scientific exploration related to marine life. Sustainability was a key consideration throughout the design process, especially in the roof’s construction, which incorporates various eco-friendly concepts and technologies.

For instance, the building incorporates water cycle treatment technology, solar power generation, and advanced ventilation systems—all concepts originally presented in the competition plan and now realized in the actual space. These features serve as case studies for visitors to learn about sustainable practices. Furthermore, the design anticipates future changes driven by emerging technologies and evolving spatial needs, ensuring the center remains adaptable.
