Setting Up Drawing Layers in Revit
When working in Revit, it is often necessary to organize drawings into layers to help the construction team easily navigate the plans. For example, during the component quantity calculation process, the construction team can hide unrelated systems and focus on a single system’s components. But how do you set up and export drawings layer by layer? The following guide explains the process.
1. First, click the Revit icon in the upper left corner, then choose to export CAD drawings in the DWG format, as illustrated below.
2. In the pop-up window, click the Export Settings button, as shown in the accompanying image.
3. Using duct drawings as an example, locate the duct category on the settings page, then click Add/Edit in the layer modifier section, as depicted in the figure.
4. Select the system type you want to include and add it to the right-hand column, as demonstrated.
5. Insert a delimiter (such as a hyphen “-“) at the delimiter position in the right air duct column. Then click OK to finalize the export settings. This method differentiates layers according to duct system types, as shown below.
Note: In practical engineering workflows, CAD drawings can be organized into separate layers based on system categories for easier viewing. You can apply the same method to electrical, piping, and other systems.
