Handling Structural Frame Overlaps in Revit
In Revit, drawing structural frames (beams) within structural models can be quite labor-intensive, especially when dealing with unconventional building designs. Overlapping beams often present challenges, as illustrated in the image below:
The image shows an acute edge angle where Revit automatically connects and trims the structural frames, resulting in a joint style that differs from the original drawing. To address this, the connection method of the structural frames needs to be managed manually, as demonstrated in the following example:
Start by selecting one of the structural frame components. Right-click on the solid grip point where the two frames intersect and choose “Do not allow connection”. Then, manually drag the frame to fit within the intersecting beam’s structure, allowing proper wrapping. This approach works in many cases; however, dragging from certain angles might still cause issues. In such situations, you can adjust the Y-axis alignment property in the instance parameters of the structural frame. Setting a uniform alignment often results in a more precise connection without altering the actual joint configuration.
