Creating Standard Door and Window Legends in Revit
Purpose: When modeling in Revit, if the door and window families in the default library don’t meet our specifications, it’s necessary to create custom door and window families. However, these custom families may not display standardized legends on floor plans. Therefore, it’s important to develop standard legends alongside family creation.
Using the door family as an example, after building the door family, navigate back to the floor plan or reference elevation view. Under the Annotation tab, select the Symbol Line tool and draw the door legend according to the drawing standards.
Once the legend is drawn, to ensure it updates dynamically with door parameters, click on the half-radius annotation and assign it the parameter for Single Door Width. Then, set a formula for the family type: Width / 2. Finally, adjust the door width parameter to verify that the legend updates accordingly.
Next, select all door components and click Edit in the Visibility/Graphics Overrides panel. Only enable the Front/Back view so that the legend is highlighted exclusively on the floor plan.
Load the family into the project and place the backdoor annotation, which may display incorrectly as “23”. This annotation needs correction.
To fix this, right-click the annotation and choose Edit Family. Edit the label by adding a label parameter for Type Name. Reload the updated tag family, and the annotation will display correctly.
The process for creating a window family standard legend is similar to the door family.
First, within the Visibility/Graphics Overrides for all window components, select only the Front/Back view. This causes the components to appear grayed out on the floor plan, ensuring only the legend is visible.
Next, under the Annotation tab, use the Symbol Line Rectangle tool to draw the legend as shown in the reference image, then lock all four sides.
Use the Line tool to add additional lines as illustrated, and apply Dimension tools to measure the segments. Click EQ to equally divide the lengths.
Adjust the window width parameter and verify that the legend updates correctly.
After loading the family into the project, incorrect labeling issues might occur and require similar modifications as described for the door family.
