Converting External References to Block References in CAD: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Convert External References to Block References in CAD

During a project, CAD drawings are commonly used. Sometimes, these drawings include external references that cannot be directly modified. In this guide, we will show you a simple method to convert those external references into block references.

1. Go to the Insert tab and click the small arrow in the bottom right corner of the Reference panel. This will open the External References dialog box.

2. In the dialog box, select the external reference you want to convert, right-click it, and choose Bind.

3. The external reference will now be converted into a block reference. To modify it, simply use the Explode command.

This approach is useful because, during project workflows, you may encounter various issues with CAD drawings. Accumulating solutions like this one helps improve efficiency. For example, if external references cannot be edited directly, converting them to block references allows you to modify the drawing easily and import it seamlessly into Revit for further use.
