A Step-by-Step Guide to Segmenting Parts in Revit

How to Segment Parts in Revit

Once an element in Revit is designated as a part, you can divide it into smaller sections by either drawing a dividing line or selecting a reference element that intersects the part.

Dividing Parts by Drawing Sketches

In the drawing area, select the part you want to divide.

Navigate to the Modify | Parts tab and locate the Parts panel.

If you want to create gaps between the divided parts, go to the Attributes section on the palette under Constraints and enter a positive value in the Divide Gap field. You can also use the Dimensioning tool to apply contours along the gap edges and adjust the parameters as needed.

Next, click Draw in the panel to enter the sketch editing mode.

The Draw panel will show various Line tools that you can use as required. The Work Plane tools allow you to display or change the active work plane where you will sketch the dividing geometry.

Specify the start and end points of each dividing line, or select other drawing tools to sketch the segmentation. Note that each straight or curved line does not need to form a closed loop, but must intersect with the part boundaries (indicated by green dashed lines) or other dividing lines to define separate geometric regions. Closed loops do not have to intersect with boundaries or other dividing lines.

When you finish drawing, click Finish Editing Mode to exit the sketch editing environment.

You can then continue editing the newly created partitions or click Finish Editing Mode again to exit.

Dividing Parts by Reference

Select the part you want to divide in the drawing area.

Go to the Modify | Parts tab and open the Parts panel.

If gaps between divided parts are desired, enter a positive value in the Divide Gap field under Attributes on the palette, below Constraints. You can also use the Dimensioning tool to apply gaps along the edges as needed.

Then, click on the Modify | Split tab and find the Refer to panel to choose an intersecting reference.

In the Reference for Intersection Naming dialog box, use the Filter dropdown menu to select available elevation levels, grids, or reference planes that can split the selected part.

Choose the desired reference and enter an offset value (positive or negative) as needed.

Click Confirm to apply the split.

You can continue editing the generated partitions or click Finish Editing Mode to exit the sketch environment.
