How to Modify Multi-Story Stairs in Revit
Learn how to edit stair groups or individual components within multi-story staircases.
When designing a multi-level staircase in Revit, stair components are grouped based on their elevation and height. Stairs sharing the same elevation and height form a group, allowing you to edit them simultaneously. You can also change the stair type for the entire group.
If the selected staircase is part of a multi-story stair group, all components within that group will be selected together, indicated by a lock icon.
For floors that require customized designs, you can separate stairs from the group by clicking the lock icon () to unlock those elements. Changes made to unlocked stairs will not affect other stairs in the group.
To rejoin the stairs to the group, click the lock icon () again. Note that any individual changes will be lost, as the stairs will revert to the group’s specifications.
In an elevation view, press the Tab key to highlight stair components, then click to select them.
If the staircase is part of a multi-story group, selecting one stair component will select all elements in that group.
To make modifications, use any of the following options:
- On the Edit panel, click Edit Stairs to modify all stair components in the group.
- Under Attributes, adjust stair properties in the properties palette or click Edit Type to choose a different stair type.
- Unlock stairs from the group to edit individual components separately.
- Relock stairs to the group to discard individual changes and restore group settings.
