How to Save Externally Loaded Revit Families Separately
During the learning process, we often come across numerous Revit model data packages online. Upon opening them, we find impressive models, and quickly realize that the key lies in the families themselves. So, the question arises: how can we save the families within a project as separate family files?
First, let’s discuss a common and well-known method. For example, if you want to save a door component family from the project as a family file, simply select the door component and click Edit Family to enter the family editing interface.
Once inside, you just need to save it as a family file.
This is the standard approach most users take. However, some families cannot be saved this way. For instance, consider the case shown below: when you select an additional axis line, the property bar shows its type as IDCA Axis Line (Vertical Direction Sub axis), but the Edit Family option does not appear in the panel as usual. This means the first method cannot be applied here.
In this article, we will focus on the second method to save such families.
As shown in the image below, locate the Family section in the Project Browser, right-click it, and select Search (S)…
Next, enter the keyword for the family name you wish to save in the Search: box—for example, “Axis Network”. Click Next, and the software will list all family names containing that keyword. This helps you quickly find the desired family, such as the IDCA grid axis (vertical axis), as shown below.
Right-click the family name you want to save (make sure to click in the correct spot!), then choose Save from the dropdown menu. Finally, select the file location and enter a file name as usual.
Using this method, you can save loaded project families as separate family files. Give it a try and see how it works!
