Functions of Duct Placeholders and Pipe Placeholders in Revit

Duct placeholders and pipe placeholders are used to create simplified representations of ducts and pipes without bends or T-shaped fittings. They serve as schematic visuals for pipelines, indicating their approximate direction and helping to guide early-stage pipeline system designs when the exact routing is still uncertain.

These placeholder ducts and pipes are always displayed as single-line geometry without any fittings, as illustrated below. They share the same parameter values as regular ducts and pipes, ensuring consistency throughout the design process.

Once the design is finalized, you can convert a placeholder duct into a detailed duct with fittings. To do this, select the pipeline, then click on the ribbon under “Modify > Pipeline Placeholder > Convert Placeholder.” This command generates an actual pipeline complete with fittings, as demonstrated in the example below.
