How to Arbitrarily Divide Curtain Wall Grids in Revit
In the Revit ribbon, under the “Curtain Wall System” section, the “Curtain Wall Grid” command cannot divide the curtain wall arbitrarily. It only allows for divisions in orthogonal directions or at uniform angles, as illustrated below.
If you want to create a curtain wall with arbitrary segmentation, you will need to use the massing tools (either the built-in mass or a conceptual mass family). Follow these steps:
(1) Create a new conceptual mass family, as shown in the example.
(2) Model any shape or face, then use the Tab key to select the desired face, as demonstrated.
(3) With the face selected, go to the ribbon and choose Modify > Split Surface to divide the selected face. Set the UV grid layout to “None,” as shown.
(4) Set the elevation as the work plane, as indicated in the figure.
Draw segmented straight lines on the defined work plane, as shown in the image.
(5) Select the face to be split again, then use the ribbon command Modify > Intersection Point > Intersection Point. Select all the drawn lines and click the “Complete” button. This will divide the surface arbitrarily into any layout you desire, as illustrated.
(6) For the segmented surfaces, you can fill them using curtain wall fill patterns (as shown) or by applying adaptive panel families to fill the surface areas.
