Integrate the landscape seamlessly; merge the scenery with the architectural form.
Greenland Hong Kong Yuehu Academy is situated in the heart of Songlong Town, Zhaoqing City, overlooking Yuehu Lake and nestled by the water’s edge. Historically, Zhaoqing was the fiefdom of Emperor Huizong of Song, earning the reputation “Kaifeng to the north and Zhaoqing to the south.” This project masterfully blends the traditional essence of the Song Academy with contemporary architectural spaces, reinventing the modern living experience inspired by the pastoral charm of the Song Dynasty.

Design Inspiration
——The rich and profound history of academies spans centuries
The formal establishment and flourishing of ancient academies took place during the Song Dynasty. According to the “History of the Development of Ancient Chinese Academies,” there were 515 academies during this period, among which Yuelu Academy stood out. Its hallmark lies in the harmonious integration of traditional courtyard layouts with natural surroundings, where every brick, tile, and scene embodies the philosophical spirit of the Song literati.

Design Evolution
——Inheriting and evolving the Song Dynasty academy layout
The architect incorporated the Song Academy’s integrated tourism routes and the philosophical fusion of ritual and music into the overall design, seamlessly blending natural surroundings with residential life. The entrance guides visitors through a wind and rain corridor into an inner courtyard, then onward to the main building and finally an outdoor viewing platform. This progression follows a spatial sequence: front courtyard, courtyard gate, main courtyard, main building, side courtyard, and back garden. Pink walls and black tiles are nestled among lush trees, while the landscape pool visually connects with Yuehu Lake, creating a transition that symbolizes the academy’s deep cultural heritage.

Modern Interpretation of Song Dynasty Architectural Aesthetics
Unlike the grandeur and opulence typical of traditional architecture, Song Dynasty aesthetics emphasize the poetic harmony between natural and man-made beauty. The design intention for Yuehu Academy was to evoke the gentle and refined charm of Lingnan literati and scholars, using contemporary architectural language to express a concise, poetic atmosphere.

Design Expression

Facade
The facade of Yuehu Academy reflects the distant mountains and nearby waters, creating a harmonious blend of reality and illusion. Drawing inspiration from the painting “The Yan Residence in Hushan,” it redefines the aesthetic ideals of Song Dynasty architecture. The staggered roofs offer a 360° panoramic view, integrating the surrounding landscape into the interior. This dissolves the boundary between indoors and outdoors, lending the building a light architectural presence and a dynamic environmental ambiance.

Visible Scenery: Transparent indoor and outdoor relationships
Roof
The roof design draws from the Song Dynasty’s Xieshan Peak style, resembling an open book. From a distance, the design cleverly balances straight lines and curves, with gentle slopes forming elegant arcs symbolizing that books are architecture. This architectural reinterpretation replicates the cultural essence of the Song Dynasty.

Window Tracery
If the flowing roof slopes express the enduring culture of the Song Dynasty, then the varied window decorations reveal its visible charm. According to the Song Dynasty text “Zaozao Fashi,” window styles were diverse and often richly adorned. The architect selected Chinese-style curtains, bamboo slips, and simple geometric lattice patterns, creating a concise yet elegant composition. This design fosters rich interplay between virtual and real elements within the intimate indoor-outdoor transition spaces.

Materials
The architect employed aluminum-magnesium-manganese metal roofing and wood grain aluminum panels to evoke the style of Song Dynasty architecture. These materials, combined with expansive glass curtain walls, effectively convey an elegant texture. Drawing cultural symbols from Song architecture, modern construction techniques were used to detail eaves, overhangs, walls, and pedestals.

Vertical light strips highlight the charm of Song-style window decorations, capturing the essence of Western craftsmanship while exuding modernity.
Conclusion
Cultural continuity is not about mere imitation or replication; it involves exploring regional characteristics, reviving urban memories, and fostering emotional connections within communities. This project embraces geopolitical culture to craft a modern narrative rooted in historical context. Through thoughtful architectural design, it creates a courtyard-style living environment embodying hospitality, respect, reunions, and garden gatherings—inviting visitors to rediscover their imagination of urban life.
