Preface
The Book of Music states: “Rites are the order of heaven and earth.” In ancient times, prominent families and aristocrats established the order of their doors and courtyards as the foundation of their homes. In contemporary architectural terms, this concept extends to the spatial order created by places.
The design philosophy behind the Lingxiu Mountain Art Museum balances inheritance and innovation. It deconstructs the spatial ritual of returning home while paying tribute to the city’s leading scholars. The result is a serene and poetic atmosphere that embodies the “reclusive” art of living.

▲ Night view of the main entrance of Lingxiu Mountain Art Museum
Located in Wuguishan District, Zhongshan City, the Lingxiushan Art Museum sits adjacent to the city center, connecting three townships and the urban area. It is easily accessible to major cities in the Pearl River Delta. Nestled beside Dajianshan Forest Park, the site offers expansive views and a unique natural landscape, making it a renowned ecological and livable area within Zhongshan City.

The design team has blended Lingnan culture with the distinctive mountain and stone aesthetics of the region. Their goal is to create a pure living environment for the city’s leading scholars, respecting the local natural environment while crafting architectural spaces rich in cultural heritage.

“There is nothing to accompany me in the thatched cottage, only screens and pillows.
I originally asked for a stone from his mountain, but I looked at his mountain from the stone.”

▲ Detailed mountain and stone ornaments on the main facade
Architectural space serves as a vessel for life, humbly giving prominence to those who live within it. Architecture becomes an integral part of the art of living. The design team embraces the concept of a “living container,” presenting the Xiushan Art Museum in a modern, elegant new Chinese style. The meticulous details reveal a harmonious blend of life aesthetics and spatial artistry.

▲ Partial aerial view of the courtyard
The building’s simple, dignified layout features a U-shaped glass structure, resembling a crystal-clear glass box. This creates an atmosphere of tranquility and depth, enhanced by the interplay of changing light and shadow.

▲ The art museum harmonizes with the nearby Wugui Mountain from a distance
The courtyard is profound, where reality and illusion complement one another.

▲ Daily scene of the courtyard corridor
The Lingxiu Mountain Art Museum is designed with a right-angled trapezoidal plan. By optimizing functional zones and circulation paths, the layout for exhibition areas, reception, offices, and other spaces is carefully arranged to create a spacious and immersive environment, enhancing space utilization efficiency.

▲ Functional zoning analysis

▲ Art gallery corridor, providing space for rest and social interaction
The architectural design adopts a minimalist style, utilizing bold black and white tones to create a fluid spatial atmosphere without partitions. Mirrors are thoughtfully integrated with natural elements such as rocks, sculptures, and trees. The interplay of light and shadow brings out the textures of materials, weaving a dialogue between hardness and softness.
Transparent inside and out, tranquil and pure.

▲ A corner of the courtyard
The first floor features an open layout with a large bay window, complemented by a shallow water pool at the entrance and a grey space that connects with the courtyard. The rockery landscape within the water element serves as a focal point, echoing the entrance and effectively shielding the space from external disturbances, ensuring privacy and spatial integrity.

▲ First floor spatial layout of the art museum
For the architectural form and materials, the design team strives for simplicity and elegance, crafting a pure public space imbued with Zen spirit. The facade incorporates materials such as U-shaped glass, aluminum alloy grilles, and granite stone, creating a light, transparent feel that softens the entrance’s scale and weight.

▲ Interior spaces continue the architectural language of the exterior
The interior space maintains the overall style of the exterior, reinterpreting the secluded living environment with contemporary architectural language to meet modern residential culture and lifestyle expectations. Within this space, noise fades away, emotions are soothed, and the interplay of floating clouds and squared buildings cast gentle shadows that slowly move across the rooms.
