Creating Ramps in Revit: Plan and 3D Views
In Revit, you can create ramps by drawing ramp sections, boundaries, and kick lines within either plan or 3D views. Similar to stairs, you can define straight ramps, L-shaped ramps, U-shaped ramps, and spiral ramps. Additionally, the ramp’s outer boundary can be modified by editing the sketch.
Navigate to the Architecture tab and select the Staircase & Ramp panel to begin.
The easiest method to add a ramp is by drawing a flight of stairs. However, the Stairway tool limits ramp designs to straight runs, straight runs with landings, and spiral sections. For more precise control when designing a ramp, it is recommended to use the boundary and kick line tools to sketch the ramp section manually.
- Open a plan or 3D view.
- Go to the Architecture tab and select Staircase & Ramp from the panel.
- (Optional) To choose a different work plane, navigate to the Architecture, Structure, or Systems tab, then click Work Plane in the Set panel.
- Under the Modify | Create Ramp Sketch tab, in the Draw panel, select either Line or Center Endpoint Arc as your drawing tool.
- Place your cursor in the drawing area and drag to sketch the ramp section.
- Click Finish Edit Mode to complete the ramp sketch.
Tip: The default Top Elevation and Top Offset settings can sometimes make the ramp slope excessively long. To adjust this, try setting the Top Elevation to the current level and lowering the Top Offset value.
When creating a new ramp, you can specify the type of railing to be used.
- Begin by clicking the Architecture tab and selecting the Staircase & Ramp panel.
- Click Create Ramp Sketch, then go to the Tools panel and choose Type of Railing and Handrail.
- In the Type of Railing and Handrail dialog box, select an existing railing type from the project, choose Default to add standard railing types, or select None to create a ramp without railings. If you select Default, Revit will activate the Railings and Handrails tools, allowing you to modify railing properties and choose a new railing type from the dialog box.
- Note: If the required railing type is not available in the dialog, exit the ramp tool, create the desired railing type first, and then restart the ramp creation process. You can also add or change railings after the ramp is created.
- Click OK to confirm your selection.
