Since its establishment, the Design Project Department of China Railway Long Design and Research Institute has been responsible for Taiyi Road Station and Xingqing Road Station of Phase I of Xi’an Metro Line 5. The department has adopted a management approach centered on competition to promote quality, becoming a powerful tool to effectively advance design progress and enhance design quality. Their well-developed design management system, strong team building, and vibrant project culture have made a lasting impression on the owners, overall team, and supervisors. As a result, the department has become a flagship example for the design project team at the Xi’an Metro Line 5 construction site.
During the preliminary design phase, the team innovatively applied BIM technology to build comprehensive models. Leveraging BIM, they completed architectural, structural, and integrated pipeline models covering over 30,000 square meters. They identified and electronically reported 500 pipeline clashes during the design proposal review phase. This integration of BIM and virtual reality technologies helped highlight critical pipelines and construction risk points. Through timely communication and adjustments, design quality improved significantly, and the preparation time for reporting was shortened. Moving forward, the team plans to expand the use of BIM technology in construction drawings and other areas of rail transit applications..

“Facing critical and complex challenges such as crossing loess fissures simultaneously at two stations and four sections, the project posed significant demands on design technology, management, and quality standards. The project leader from Tielong Design and Research Institute explained that the department confronted numerous design difficulties. To address this, it gathered top talents and actively implemented BIM technology as a “cardiac stimulant” to drive design projects forward. This approach successfully delivered scientific management benefits and enhanced the capabilities of the design team.
Since early 2008, China Railway Long has been exploring the full lifecycle application of BIM technology throughout design and construction processes. They established comprehensive pipeline models for subway stations and dynamically updated and maintained these models as design progressed. This approach reduced errors, omissions, and clashes during design, improving overall quality. In construction, BIM was used for organizing, analyzing, and simulating construction plans, supporting quality assurance, schedule management, and cost control. These efforts have earned high praise from project owners in cities such as Beijing, Nanning, Xi’an, Urumqi, and Chengdu. Notable successful applications of BIM technology by China Railway Long include Chengdu Metro Line 2 East Extension, Nanning Metro Line 1, Beijing Metro Line 8 Phase III, Xi’an Metro Line 5, and Urumqi Metro Line 1.
