Zhuhai Opera House: China’s Only Maritime Venue Nears Completion Amid BIM Challenges

The construction of the Zhuhai Opera House at Sun Moon Bay began on April 28, 2010. The project covers a planned land area of 50,000 square meters, with a total construction area of approximately 50,000 square meters and an estimated investment of around 1.08 billion yuan. After six years of development, the Zhuhai Opera House is finally nearing completion.

One Hospital and Three Pavilions: Building Zhuhai’s Cultural Identity

The Zhuhai Opera House, along with the Zhuhai Museum, Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, and Zhuhai Cultural Center, forms a significant cultural complex known as “One Hospital and Three Pavilions.” This major cultural initiative aims not only to enhance the resource value of the Zhuhai area and create a vibrant cultural atmosphere but also to establish a unique landmark, serving as a “city business card” for Zhuhai.

Zhuhai Opera House Nears Completion

Situated on Yeli Island along Lover’s Road, the Zhuhai Opera House occupies a prime central location. It overlooks both mountains and sea, separated from the bustling urban area by a bridge, giving it a distinctive character. The building’s overall design features two shells—one large and one small—drawing inspiration from the famous painting “The Birth of Venus.” In the artwork, Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, emerges from a shell. Furthermore, the “Sun Moon Shell” is unique to the Pearl River Delta, which inspired the Sun Moon Shell concept for the building.

The exterior frame of the Opera House is constructed from steel, using about 10,000 tons of steel structure. During the day, the structure offers a semi-transparent effect, while at night it glows like crystal-clear moonlight. This design symbolizes “pearls growing from pearls, pearls growing from the sea,” reflecting Zhuhai’s urban spirit of embracing maritime culture and linking its past with its future.

Across the bay from Yeli Island lie the Zhuhai Museum and Urban Planning Exhibition Hall. Positioned at the southeast corner of the Cultural Park at the intersection of Lover’s Road and Meihua Road, these buildings face Lover’s Road and Xianglu Bay to the east. The site spans approximately 50,335.94 square meters, with a total investment of about 650 million yuan. The architectural style features horizontal and vertical elements that connect the sea and sky, creating a harmonious and organic unity between the two pavilions.

From a distance, the two pavilions resemble giant dragons soaring into the sky, with the head and tail of the dragon echoing each other. This design merges the essence of traditional Chinese culture with modern architectural aesthetics.

The new Zhuhai Cultural Center is located on the north side of Lian’an Road in Gongbei, Zhuhai. Covering an area of 9,514 square meters, the project has a total construction area of 19,895 square meters and an investment of 160 million yuan. The facade design of the Cultural Center is inspired by the “Harp.” The building’s lines are smooth, simple, and elegant. The window frames are arranged in a harmonious pattern, resembling a sequence of dynamic musical notes that create a light and relaxed rhythm, emphasizing the artistic atmosphere of the center.

The interior is still under decoration, with a scheduled premiere set for July next year.

Recently, the overall structure of Sun Moon Bay has been largely completed; however, the scaffolding in the middle of the “shell” has yet to be removed. Workers continue to fine-tune the internal intelligent systems. According to the construction company Zhuhai Urban Construction Group Co., Ltd., the Sun Moon Shell’s thin-walled, large curved surfaces were primarily built using advanced 3D modeling BIM technology. The curved exterior walls are constructed through segmented pouring, requiring precise positioning to ensure the correct curvature—a critical and challenging aspect of the construction process.

Given the special location of Sun Moon Bay, the exterior walls are made from specially selected tempered steel materials that resist moisture erosion and maintain their fresh appearance over time with regular cleaning.

Mr. Hu, head of the Urban Construction Group, confirmed that the Zhuhai Opera House will hold its premiere no later than July next year. Meanwhile, the Zhuhai Museum, Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, and Zhuhai Cultural Center are all scheduled to open to the public in 2016.

Typical Applications of BIM in Design

During the theater’s design process, Autodesk BIM software was utilized to optimize seat arrangements and conduct line-of-sight analyses. This system allows designers to effectively assess the visibility from each seat and make quick, informed adjustments.

The seats were integrated into the model as modular units, allowing real-time adjustments to their spacing and size. Combined with a general human body model, the system simulates sightlines from various angles. Autodesk BIM software automatically generates line-of-sight simulations based on architectural requirements, enabling architects to visually evaluate audience views, verify seat height and angle, and decide on necessary design modifications.

With parameterization, visual analysis can be performed for up to 1,550 seats—an otherwise unimaginable workload—greatly enhancing efficiency and reducing errors. This technological approach represents a significant advancement in theater design.
