This commercial building accommodates a Japanese restaurant, a café, and several small shops, all united by a shared philosophy of enhancing the practical value of local food and ingredients. Situated in a residential neighborhood on the outskirts of Kampala, Uganda, the design features a large thatched roof that slopes at a right angle to the site’s natural incline. To preserve five existing trees, the roof’s outline is recessed around their positions.

First Floor Plan
The site’s gentle slope is subtle and almost unnoticeable, a feature we embraced in the design. The building’s lowest section consists of two stories, while the middle area incorporates landscaped outdoor spaces. A parking level constructed from concrete and steel is located below an elevation of 4 meters. Above this, the first floor is built using eucalyptus and other local woods.

Sectional View

Eucalyptus wood is typically used only for roof trusses and scaffolding due to its tendency to shrink, twist, and crack. However, by refining the drying and logging processes, we have transformed it into a strong enough material to serve as the main structural component of the roof.
To maximize the use of local labor, 16 frame structures were assembled manually without the use of heavy machinery. This permeable roof design creates an open space ideal for gatherings and provides a comfortable shelter from direct sunlight.
