1. Preface

In February 2009, IBM introduced its latest strategy, “Smart Earth.” The company believes the next task for the IT industry is to fully leverage the new generation of IT technologies across various sectors, particularly by embedding and integrating sensors into objects and equipment such as power grids, railways, bridges, tunnels, highways, buildings, water supply systems, dams, oil and gas pipelines, and by widely connecting them to form the Internet of Things.

China’s infrastructure construction presents vast opportunities. The Chinese government is undertaking extensive infrastructure development with significant control, determination, and financial support. The “Smart Earth” strategy is expected to create greater value. IBM hopes that this strategy will drive another technological revolution following the wave brought by the Internet.

Many Americans now compare the “Smart Earth” strategy to the previous “information highway” initiative, viewing it as a key approach for economic revitalization and establishing competitive advantages. The potential for this strategy to spark a technological and economic wave similar to the Internet revolution is not only of interest to the United States but also to the world.

On November 3, 2009, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council delivered an important speech titled “Let Science and Technology Lead China’s Sustainable Development,” emphasizing the significance of developing new materials, including new energy, the Internet of Things, microelectronics, low-carbon technology, and optoelectronics. The Internet of Things has been identified as one of China’s five emerging strategic industries.

Research institutions predict that the Internet of Things will become widespread within the next decade, evolving into a high-tech market valued at over one trillion yuan, with its industry being 30 times larger than the Internet.

Inspired by the “Smart Earth” strategy, we believe the Internet of Things will soon give rise to a major emerging industry within the construction sector: the “Smart Building” industry.

Even before the development of “smart buildings,” there were already applications of intelligent buildings and smart homes. These achievements, along with the use of BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology in architectural design and construction, have provided a solid foundation for the technological advancement of smart buildings. Previously, functional architectural technologies, smart home systems, and BIM developed independently. BIM technology, in particular, underwent a challenging process due to the complexities of 4D modeling and calculation. Today, it has matured and is widely applied.

The application of IoT technology based on BIM core not only offers three-dimensional visualization for information model management in buildings, but also imbues all building components and devices with perception and vitality, taking building operation and maintenance to a new level of intelligence.

This industrial transformation from intelligent buildings to smart buildings will not only provide practical technical solutions for sustainable operation, maintenance, and development within the construction industry, but will also create billions in potential markets.
