How to Create Two Different Roof Shapes in Revit
In some projects, roofs may require features like overhangs or angled tops, as shown in the image. So, how do you create such uniquely shaped roofs in Revit? Below is a step-by-step explanation.
1. Roof with an Angled Top
1. Go to the Architecture tab, and under the Build panel, select the Roof command. Use the Trace Roof tool to draw the roof outline as shown in the image.
2. Select the boundary lines where you want to apply the angle, such as the left and right edges. In the instance properties, set the Offset from Roof Reference by entering appropriate values, as demonstrated.
3. After making the adjustments, click Complete Edit Mode to finalize the roof with angled corners, as illustrated in the picture.
Note: When editing the roof footprint in this method, the slope definition cannot be removed.
2. Suspended Roof (Roof with Overhangs)
Roofs with overhangs can be designed by drawing the roof outline manually or by using the Pick Wall command to add overhangs. Below is a detailed explanation of drawing a roof with overhangs using the Pick Wall command and adding overhang values.
1. Using a simple wall drawing as an example, click the Roof command and select Pick Wall. Then, draw the roof outline by selecting the edges of the walls, as shown in the image.
2. Select the roof footprint where you want to add the overhang. In the properties panel, enter the desired overhang values, as demonstrated.
Note: It is necessary to use the Pick Wall command to draw the roof outline so that the Overhang parameters can be applied.
3. Set the appropriate overhang values and click Complete Edit Mode to finish drawing the roof. Then use the Attach Top/Bottom command to attach the walls to the roof, as shown in the final image.
Summary: By following these instructions, you will understand how to use two key commands for roof creation in Revit: Offset from Roof Reference and Overhang (Suspended). In practical projects, when you encounter roofs with angled tops or require overhangs, setting these parameters is the most convenient, accurate, and efficient method to achieve the desired results.
