What Does "nD" Mean in BIM and What Information Does It Include?

Today, let’s explore the meaning of “nD” in BIM and what information it encompasses. I was inspired to write this after seeing a BIM colleague share an explanation of 8D-BIM. Here, I want to briefly share what I have observed so far.

Beyond the widely accepted 4D (3D + time) and 5D (4D + budget), which are generally undisputed, other dimensions such as maintenance and management have very different interpretations. Currently, no single organization or company offers a definitive or unified explanation.

Here’s a breakdown of the common definitions:

1D: A scratch point—some describe it as a single piece of information.

2D: Vector representation—a planar drawing showing length and orientation on the XY axis.

3D: Shape—the core of BIM, representing the model’s form with information across the XYZ axes.

4D: Time/Scheduling—usually relating to sequencing or time-based factors in construction.

5D: Cost/Estimating—costs tied to construction activities, influenced by objects and time. This dimension typically covers financial and cash flow analysis, contract management, and full lifecycle cost estimation of projects.

6D: Sustainability—focused on energy consumption, green building certifications like LEED, and tracking sustainability metrics.

7D: Facility Management—application of operation and maintenance management, including ongoing upkeep, renovations, and expansions during a building’s lifecycle.

While the above represents mainstream views, alternative perspectives include:

6D-1: Extends 5D by adding performance metrics. This includes building usage efficiency, system operation efficiency, carbon emissions, energy consumption, and even value engineering and value analysis (VE/VA).

6D-2: Combines 5D with building management, similar to 7D, focusing on operational and maintenance management methods.

8D-1: Builds on 7D with blockchain refinement, mainly applied in building maintenance, energy fields, and areas requiring information trust and traceability such as carbon trading.

8D-2: Combines 5D, 6D-1, and decommissioning—covering demolition, replacement of buildings or equipment, and related processes like recycling.

The most widely recognized 10D model is the “Integrated Digital Project Delivery” (IDPD) promoted by Hong Kong’s Kinmen Construction Company in 2018. It defines dimensions beyond 3D as follows:

4D: Planning—strategic planning and decision-making for construction processes.

5D: Quantification—quantitative evaluation and measurement of materials and resources.

6D: Sustainability—minimizing waste and promoting eco-friendly construction practices.

7D: Facility Management—enabling clients to fully utilize BIM models for building maintenance and management.

8D: Design Collaboration—an open integration platform ensuring all stakeholders access the best design solutions.

9D: Automation & Robotics—leveraging BIM data to control drones and construction machinery for automated execution.

10D: Artificial Intelligence—integrating AI into BIM to autonomously generate design solutions.

After all this, I believe the real value of BIM isn’t about how many “dimensions” you use but how effectively you leverage BIM capabilities to improve construction projects. Whether it’s 4D, 5D, 7D, or even beyond, the key is making BIM work powerfully for your project’s success.

That concludes our discussion on what “nD” means in BIM and what information it includes. I hope this overview helps clarify the concept for everyone!
