How to Create a Volume Analysis Schedule in Revit

Creating a Volume Analysis Schedule in Revit

After designing the building volume to explore its conceptual design, it’s essential to analyze this volume throughout the design process. In particular, you need to:

  • Identify which floors require air conditioning (for example, parking levels usually do not need air conditioning).
  • Calculate the volume of the spaces where air conditioning units will be installed.
  • Verify the HVAC load results.

Follow the steps below to create a volume analysis schedule and define volume floors. Note that the exact workflow may vary depending on the specific information you want to display in your schedule.

1. Go to the View tab, then in the Create panel, click the Schedules drop-down and select Schedule/Quantities.

2. In the New Schedule dialog, do the following:

  • Choose Volume Floors as the category.
  • If Volume Floors is not visible by default, enable Show model categories in this view. Then, from the Filter list, select Architecture.
  • Name your schedule appropriately in the Name field.
  • Select Building Components List.
  • Click OK to proceed.

3. In the Schedule Properties dialog, under the Fields tab, add the following fields to your schedule:

  • Purpose
  • Elevation
  • Volume: Type
  • Floor Volume

4. Click OK twice to create the schedule.

5. In the schedule, enter the purpose for each volume floor according to its elevation. After entering the first value, you can click on the field for subsequent rows and select from the drop-down list.

6. Next, organize and subtotal the schedule by purpose:

  • In the Properties palette, open the schedule’s properties.
  • Click Sorting/Grouping and then Edit.
  • In the Sorting/Grouping tab of the dialog:
  • Check Grand totals with title and total count.
  • Group each instance individually by Purpose in ascending order.
  • Enable footer with title and total count, and add a blank line.
  • Set the sorting method to sort by Elevation in ascending order.

7. At the bottom of the dialog, switch to the Formatting tab and configure the following:

  • Select the Floor Volume field.
  • Set the alignment to Right.
  • Enable Calculate totals.
  • Optionally, adjust the format of the Purpose, Elevation, and Volume: Type fields by selecting each and setting their alignment to Center.

8. Click OK to apply the settings.

The resulting schedule will display the total volume for each volume floor, subtotals based on purpose, and the combined volume of each floor. This data is valuable for estimating the HVAC load based on the planned use of each volume floor.
