Linyajiang Bay is a distinctive regional landmark in Chongqing. This residential art museum project explores the localization of architecture by responding to its natural and geographical context within the urban environment.

Situated near the Jialing River, the art museum is framed by two opposing river bays that shape the cityscape, providing a majestic natural backdrop within the urban area. Located on a high cliff, the site offers panoramic views of the entire river bay and overlooks the future core Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) area of Yuelai.

Early design attempts to create scenarized forms initially felt abrupt and lacked harmony with the natural surroundings. However, during an evening site visit, the setting sun’s glow unified the city in a warm hue, highlighting the mountains and river bays as the true protagonists of the landscape. This moment inspired a design approach that honors the essence of the place and responds intimately to nature, guiding the final architectural concept.

The design language is deliberately restrained and amplified through references to cliffs, river bays, sunsets, and mountain silhouettes. The building’s shape echoes the direction of the river bay and mountains, formed by a simple curve that carves a flowing bay stream in the air. Triangular corner plots are shaped with clear directional arcs, emphasizing the site’s natural geometry.

The mountain itself was sculpted to embed the building seamlessly into the cliffside, maximizing environmental integration. The architecture avoids subjective symbolic forms and instead uses glass to create a fully transparent structure, visible from all angles. At sunset, the building visually dissolves into its natural surroundings, with sunlight penetrating through the entire museum and illuminating the spaces beyond.

Behind 188 custom-made transparent glass panels, the main structure and interior spaces merge seamlessly with the facade. These massive walls enclosing the functional areas resemble giant rocks emerging from the mountains, radiating a timeless, independent presence.

The design thoughtfully embraces the city’s unique mountainous and riverine character, adding a new cultural gathering space and an emotionally engaging experience to Chongqing.

This modest architectural gesture demonstrates a profound response to the environment. By adapting to the site’s natural features, the building gains a grander presence. The minimalist design language reflects a deep understanding of the city and its lifestyle, rooting the project in the land and resonating with people. The building’s second floor rotates as a whole, enhancing the sense of cliffside immersion and creating a dramatic, awe-inspiring atmosphere.

(BIM Learning)

The entire building features an 18-meter-long cantilevered observation deck, resembling a vast city platform. Walking to the observation deck’s edge feels like stepping into the sky, seamlessly merging with the surrounding world—a dreamlike experience unfolding right before your eyes.
