How to Use Revit to Add Railings on Pedestrian Bridge Families
In Revit, there are two main methods to place railing families: by drawing paths or by picking a host element to place the railing on. Below, we will guide you through the process of adding railings to families with longitudinal slopes.
1. Start by loading the bridge family into your project, as shown in the illustration.
2. Draw a wall at the intended location of the railing. Ensure the wall’s length matches the length of the railing, as demonstrated in the image.
3. Double-click the wall to edit its profile. Modify the wall’s contour so that it aligns with the longitudinal slope of the bridge deck, as depicted in the figure.
4. Next, draw a railing along the wall, following the path shown in the picture.
5. Select the railing, then click on the Pick New Host command. Choose the wall as the new host, as illustrated.
6. Select the wall, right-click, and choose to hide it in the current view, as shown in the image.
7. The core idea behind this technique is to assign a pickable host to the railing while permanently hiding the supporting element. This approach is demonstrated in the accompanying picture.
In other words, this method shows how to overcome limitations during project completion. When you cannot place a component directly on another (like a railing on an arch bridge), you can use an alternative element (such as a wall) to host the railing and then hide that element to achieve the desired result.
